Gin Rummy

Basic rules for Gin Rummy

The game Gin Rummy was invented way back in 1909 in the United States but it is based on a Mexican game that is much older called Conquian. There has been a recent upsurge in interest in card Rummy and more and more people want to learn how to play Gin.

How to Play Gin

It normally takes about fifteen minutes to play the Gin Card game. The aim of this form of card Rummy is to score more points than your opponent; it is a two player game. It uses a standard pack of playing cards containing 52 cards. The lowest value card is the ace which is equal to one; it then increases to the highest card which is the King.

When you play Gin your objective is to achieve melds. A meld is a set of matching cards; these could be a set of cards that form a run (for example; Ace,2, 3, and four) or three or four cards that share the exact same rank ( for example; four aces or four threes). Cards that don’t belong to a meld are referred to as deadwood and your aim is to get rid of these as you build more melds.

During the game the two players take turns dealing; the person dealing first can be selected using various methods such as whoever draws the lowest card from a pack. Once the dealer is selected the Gin card game commences with each of the players being dealt ten cards. Another card is placed turned up so that each player can see it; this is referred to as the upcard. All the remaining cards are kept face down in a pack in front of the players; this pack is referred to as the stock pile. Any cards that are later discarded will be placed under the upcard; this is referred to as the discard pile.

When it is a players turn they have two choices; they can either take a card from the discard pile or remove a card from the stock pile. They will also need to add one of their cards to the discard pile; this is the ideal place to put your Deadwood cards.

This version of card Rummy continues until either there are only two cards left in the stock pile or a player knocks. A player is allowed to knock if he has less than 10 points worth of deadwood; if they have no deadwood left they are expected to knock. In order to knock a player places his discarded card face down and displays his melds and deadwood. The other player has the opportunity of getting rid of some of their deadwood by a process called laying off whereby he can fit these cards in with the knocker’s melds. Once a player has knocked it is then a case of adding up the scores to see who has the best score.

Variations of Card Rummy

Learning how to play Rummy shouldn’t take you long you long to pick up and once you master the basic rules you might want to try one of the other variations of the game. There are many variations and these other ways of playing card gin mean that you will never get bored with the game. It is generally agreed that learning how to play Rummy is not difficult but learning how to master it is a lifetime pursuit. This is because card Rummy and other forms of the game really do depend on a lot of skill as well as luck; it is this that makes it so engaging.
